Good morning! Here are today's 5. Hope they're entertaining. J

I set crossies just for pleasure. I wonder if some of you excellent regulars would like to try a few of my clues? Since they're new, no letters!

Please withhold solutions till 5 pm (GMT + 1) to allow others to have a go.

1. Can a king take the place of a Hitlerite leader? (4)
2. Whacked an ace, splitting racket (4,2)
3. Drill starts in army units and grooms every recruit (5)
4. Say nothing in rally about a symbolical narration (8)
5. MIT has another supply providing an encouraging stimulus (1,4,2,3,3)

Just taking a peek in while I try not to think of dinner.

No.1 might be a bit unfair to you as you may not use the word across the pond. It's in Chambers Dictionary. Good for you on 2 to 5. See you later. J

My first thought was Hess (who of course isn't in Chambers), then I figured it might be Kopf (German for leader, but again...), then thought it might be rook, since the K and the R can "switch places" (well, they don't really, but people always seem to say they do) in castling (and you might be asking if they really do), and a Hitlerian leader is certainly a kook, and R and K can switch places for "king", and... :)

2- DONE IN
3- AUGER
4- ALLEGORY
5- A SHOT IN THE ARM

Brilliant, once again, Tony. Absolutely no need to publish my workings this week. THANK YOU.
Hi Jazzy. Hope the 'outing' went well.
Yes Ari, I feared that word would not have developed sea-legs. Good solving though. And NOW I'm off to partake of the grub. Glad you enjoyed 'em. See you next week.

Quite a few 'absentees' this week, eh?
