I'm on the last one.

I leave the only in the usual place; it's freezing (5) ?O?A?

Looks like it must be POLAR, but I cannot parse it. I've rechecked the clue and this is exactly how it's given.

Help!

Hi jolan
"Usual" could be "Par"?

sOLe - can you think of a reason to drop the "se"?

Hi again, Chris. Iagree, PAR is certainly 'usual'. I couldn't get past this though. I cannot eliminate the SE either. Wonder if there's a mistake?

Hi Trevor. Your idea looks very good. I leave the OIL in the usual place; it's freezing (5) definitely POLAR and the reference to (heating) oil would fit in nicely.

Don't know which "Enigma" this is. The puzzle is in a magazine called The Tablet. Probably bought in. I'll email them and enquire. Since it's a "bottle of wine" prize xword they may not wish to answer.

Thanks again T, I've now no doubt you're absolutely correct. John

...also... methinks Enigmatist is the Guarsian setter.

Surely not, trevor - there are never any mistakes in the Guardian!!!!!!

There is an Enigmatist who produces Guradian crosswords - could they possibly be related?

Is it significant that neither jolan nor I managed to spell "Guardian" correctly?

not heard of The Tablet.
it was ChrisE's parsing that made me look for a word with OL missing an 'i', not too hard to find one. all credit to him if it is indeed correct.
