Saturday's Guardian had "Scoffed in compiler's absence?".

To my mind the wordplay here does not lead towards the solution, but is a retrospective comment on a solution which has to be obtained from the definition and the crossing letters, in the style of a quick crossword.

Am I out of date in thinking this is not legitimate clueing??

I too thought it was unfair, but mainly because you have to be a habitual Guardian crossworder to recognise the reference to a different compiler from the setter of that particular crossword.
