Here are two more where I don't understand how to end up with the answer:

C-Cassius-like: look – no arms! (5)
ANS: clear

Do well to love a magician (8)
ANS: Prospero
I know that Prospero is a magician in The Tempest, but "do well to love"?

I'm guessing it's c+lean = clean, not clear.

I'm also therefore guessing that in heraldry 'clean' means a shield with nothing on it - ?

Now I'll go & look at the crossword...

Hey Livs,
sorry, I didn't answer more quickly.
It's actually not in todays Guardian crossword, but I found it in an older collection of Guardian crosswordsfrom 1994. This is also why I knew the solution without understanding how the clue acutally worked...

The Dictionary on this website also gives the following meaning for "clean":
"not carrying concealed weapons" - so this would fit...
