1. Rocket on for very short meal? Count me out. The answer, according to another thread is reproval but I don't get why.

2. Garden perhaps showing pear tree finally chopped. The answer is comic - I get the fact that it's comice with the e lopped off but why is that a garden?

3. Thing that's essential to one's nearest and dearest. The answer is res according to another thread but again I can't figure out why part from the fact that it features in the words nearest and dearest. But what does res mean?

4. No good leaving stylists division during employment for painter. The answer is pop artist according to another thread but again I can't figure out why

thank you all - much appreciated! It's so frustrating when I can't understand why a solution to a clue is what it is!

Could also be that "res" in latin means "thing"?

Indeed,ab --- and it's "essential" in that it stands in the middle of those two words (not exactly, of course). In fact, with all due respect to rossim, the "des(-irable) res(-idence)" thing is surely purely coincidental here?!(No offence intended).

No offence taken GK. It was just a thought but AB's explanation is much better.

"don't take this the wrong way" is always taken the wrong way isn't. it's the only way you can take it, that's why.
