Stuck in sevreal places at the moment. Can anyone help with this one, please?

I thought it might read upwards ending in "deb" for the socialite, hencing starting BED, but I can't find anything to fit.

Thanks, allatsea - never read it. Wikipedia says that there was a Nantucket whaling family of that name - I suppose Melville knew that.
