thanks to everybody - the N in smartypants is the 3rd letter for the 4 letter word. and I have gone for sand as harryh said it is smoooth and send is not connected and sank does ? not exist as a word???

Answers in 3 months or so as it is a 3 monthly magazine, and I usually get a clue wrong despite everyones help and I will never win the prize but I do keep tryong to win a digital radio
