I think I have the right answer but not sure how it fits
1D. Two newsmen and a CID operative look through it
*A*E*E**/*I*D*W
Obviously the second word is WINDOW and the first seems to be BASEMENT but can't see how it fits the clue.

casement window(anag)

looks more like.....casement window (anagram) two newsmen a cid
