Not familiar with Chifonie. Some nice ones, I thought, e.g. 17 & 27a, 18d.

The only thing I can find that looks remotely possible is DUELED, but my Chambers (with which I would agree) only gived the "LL" spelling. Any suggestions?

I have put TRENDIEST, but don't fully see it - DIES in TRENT perhaps? RENDI in TEST? The first looks more likely, but I'm not happy about "yearns to be" cluing "dies". What was your take on this?

We do say we're dying for this or that when we are longing for something don't we?

I agree, rossim, but "to die for", "dying for" and "dies for" really have quite different implications, I think.

What I mean, I think, is that "dying" could be metaphorical, whereas "die" must have a much more literal meaning

I don't understand your post just above this, ChrisE but I agree about duelled. I've been some time trying to work out what it could be - and failed.
My (admittedly very small) dictionary gives double 'l' for duelled.

Having re-read the posts, I now see, Chrise, that you were acknowledging that you'd put 'Gived'.
When I saw your question marks and (was it? I wish you could see the posts while replying) 'brainstorm' I mistakenly thought that it was another clue.

Sorry to confuse, twm. I think I was trying to type "gives" rather than "gave"
