This week's AZED was a brute in my view. It's done but I have difficulty in parsing 5D. Any insights gratefully accepted

The first 4 letters gives you "eggs on" (as in incite) and the last 2 give an abbreviation for unserviceable ("not fit to serve").

Thanks, Peterm.... I have now learned a new meaning for a very familiar three-letter word
Still think this week's was a brute and I do his puzzle every week :-)

I agree, Pogle. I did this puzzle this morning, but the bottom middle took me ages because I couldn't get 35a without more helpful letters and several of the words with the checking letters had valid alternatives.

Agree with other comments. This was a war of attrition. For a lot of the clues you needed to know an obscure second meaning of an otherwise commonplace word before you could find the (also obscure) answer. Finished, but didn't really enjoy it. A bit short on laughs for once.

28D DEARN What part does 'safe' play in the wordplay? If 'safe' meant 'in' or 'on' I could see it, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
