16D could be "squatted" or "squatter", couldn't it??

hi Al, i struggled to finish this one, i had SQUATTED, which i was fairly happy with, but the "E" led me to EARTHING for 27A (clue "coating"), which i was much less comfortable with (E-R--I-G)..what do you think?

I've used "earthing" too, tho' not very convinced. Still doubtful on 16D, because either could be correct.

i think it's SQUATTED, on the basis "became" is a verb, past tense ...whereas SQUATTER is a noun. if the answer was SQUATTER, "became" is redundant in the clue ... or am i clutching at straws here? i'm glad we agree on EARTHING, maybe someone else can provide some input.

I went for squatted but think answer to 'coating' is enrobing.
