Still puzzling over these answers from ST4493 - help appreciated!

1. Dial not affected by pressure(4-4). The answer is laid back. Clearly an anagram of dial but can't work out the rest.

2. Alice sang new number (9). The answer is analgesic - clearly anagram of alice sang but analgesic doesn't mean number.

3. Edging along pavement (9). The answer is kerbstone. Why?

4. He may be a fighter but he hates the gore (8. The answer is toreador but why?

If a toreador is gored by a bull I shouldn't think he'd like it very much!

Thanks guys. I understand that kerbstone is the edging on a pavement but then that's just a straightforward definition where is the cryptic part of the clue. As for toreador I don't get how the clue can be broken down to give you the word toreador. Am I being very dense?
