20d is Volcano. Your i is wrong, or perhaps you made a typing error.

I have now filled most of the grid but can't figure out what to highlight and the connection with 6a which is a cricketing term. any help would be great.

I assume you have got the theme from the title
and from the extra letters.

NAGG & NELL who had no legs ( No 6a STUMPS) lived in A DUSTBIN. If you search the grid you should see those 8 letters in a U shape.

How have solvers resolved the dilemma created by the occurrence of one of the characters in 2 places in the completed grid? (2 Down and 20 Down reversed). The only thing I can come up with is that he can't sit down, so he has to "stand up", so highlight his name in 20 down.

Am still not convinced on what 'further object' (singular) to highlight. Obviously either 'A DUSTBIN' or 'DUSTBIN' or thematically correct 'DUSTBINS', but....
"2 words, 8 letters" ? - Only option 1 is 2 words!
"without stumps" ? - the characters are WITH stumps, or does this somehow allude to 'stumps' definition 'end of play'?
