As usual I'm stuck on three!
20 across: Sign clanger's to be broadcast (6)
5 down: Ball (short) put into box (8) _E_T_ _ _ E
7 down Finish off (then I can't read the next bit! it starts with p and ends with nt so could be peasant?) couple (4) _O_E
Also can anyone explain the bits in brackets i.e. (like 24a) or (like 4) or am I being particularly thick today!

Tyrus has form for this sort of thing. He once included a message about his beloved Wimbledon FC. There is a message in the completed grid, if you read across the top row and the bottom row. this leads to a hint about the apparent theme of the clues which are followed by (like + number). They are all anagrams of a kind.
