2D. You need a 9 letter word, beginning 'ha' that means 'shelter'. It's an American spelling. The six letter word is the last six letters.

Lochgelly is a strap once used on Scottish schoolchidren. Presumably g could be gent, to be dropped. But can't see Loch as a plant

Keith, think of a 5-letter word for 'chap' (man)+ a 3 letter word for 'fall behind'. The later fits inside the former.
