Do you think you could use ? instead of - for missing letters? I'm finding it difficult to count how many letters there are in the third one (and you haven't given this information at all for the sedond, as far as I can see)

Re 12a I had lyre (sounds like lire if you didn't know otherwise) and has strings. And so does lute, which fits and sounds better.

Context is everything.
