Does the "Y" come from "stay up"?
If so "stay up" could be "stop up"
This would then fit with "poke" which has already been given as an answer to you.

Hi joker I has "push "as my answer. Found it on an online dictionary. Not too sure if it's correct.

I don't have the x-word but surely it must be stop up and poke, poke being a double definition?

Your "push" may well be correct here. This would fit with my thoughts of "stop up"rather than "stay up"
I don't have this crossword so a bit in the dark here,Rosetta.
