The Exception proves the rule


letter count please for those with out the puzzle, ta.

Though this is a mistake by the setter; in the expression "the exception proves the rule", "proves" in meant in the sense of "tests" rather than "confirms".

While I'm in the mood for complaining, another one I hate is "begs the question" used to mean "asks for the question"; it means "ducks the question".

That's a very interesting article, philip - I admit that I might have been hasty on that one.

that's what I thought. your other "favourite" seems even more odd. apparently it is generally reguarded as so debased that it should never be used these days.

But unfortunatley it commonly is.
