Could be P + REWAR(D) for PREWAR - not entirely obvious why the D is dropped, though.

Though "P" was "D" in prewar times - hope this helps!

sure its "prewar" historical period before 1st world war, really struggling with 4.down, and 10.down, any help gratefully recieved.
4.down. soldiers one by one encircling hill, releasing leader without a doubt(12).
I think it starts RES and i think TOR might be in there but without leader,so OR, and it might end in GHT, anyhoo all help gratefully recieved
