Could 6 across be Glass Cirri (plural of cirrus)instead of Glass Fibre? Fits the dictionary definition and Glass fibre isn't really made of vitreous filaments is it?

Glass fibre is categorised within a group of man-made materials historically referred to as man-made mineral fibres
(MMMF). However, a more appropriate name is man-made vitreous fibres (MMVFs) or synthetic vitreous fibres
(SVFs), reflecting the glassy, non-crystalline nature of the material.

Jazzgirl your information is enlightening and quite impressive so I'm still not sure about this. Your definitions would support "glass fibre" and we use "glass fibre" as a plural noun meaning a mass of fibres in fact so the plurality in the clue may not be conclusive. It wouldn't surprise me if the compiler's intention was "fibre". We may have to wait two weeks to find out!
