It lives by beach and is upset during embarkation (4). C-A-
Answer could be crab,but I cannot fathom out why? Somebody please help.

if embarcation is spelt with a C rather than K then crab is inside the word reversed

Did they spell embarkation with a c?

If so, it would read backwards in the clue

during = c (circa) = rab reversed in embarkation

The c is given as an alternative spelling in Chambers.

I have puzzled why the clue is worded awkwardly without "the" before beach but can still only come up with Crab or clam - I'm not convinced about either
