presumably relative (one of the family) but do not see rest of clue

Chapped - cracked. I took it as 'capped' with 'h' hot.
I couldn't work out the reasoning for 'relative'.

I've worked out 'relative' now -
it's 'rive' for split
and 'tale'(backwards) for lie.
