Re ASSET.
Strength is defined as "a beneficial characteristic" in Chambers, which could possibly confirm your ASSET.

thanks joker. rte guide xword can be vague at times. i have ?s?e? asset fits. must be the ultimate in expectation. 4 4. last hope. it comes as an emergency service 4 6 fire engine. these ans hold my 2 key letters for asset and as xword all finished asset it is. BUT A POOR EXAMPLE MUST MEAN JUST THAT. asset=strength=poor axample!

To play to one's strengths is to use one's assets.

I totally agree mamie, this clue is starting to annoy me.
I'm going with your asset=strength=poor example, and put it down to a poor clue.
