40d: One group of workers get in a twist, seeing such lords (9)
S - I - - - U -L
(The only word I can think of which fits these letters is SPIRITUAL, but I can't see why.)

47a: Quantity of action got in the mechanicals' play? Yes and no (5,5)
- - - N - / S - A - E

All help gratefully accepted!

But surely link between "spiritual" and 'seeing such lords' is very tenuous?

House of Lords has Lords Temporal, Legal and Spiritual (bishops) and maybe many more. A la Lanterne with 'em all!

In "Midsummer Night's Dream" the mechanicals put on a play. The part of the Lion is played by Snug. He has very little to say and so the usual meaning of "Lion's share" becomes just the opposite.
