The letters i have are D?E?E? I am getting a few obvious answers where the logic escapes me

maybe Deepen - as in plumb the depths?

Or maybe deeper

reading it back to myself, it does seem obviousish.
Plumb - measure the depth of something.

I reckon the wording of the clue makes it Deepen rather than Deeper.
