I agree, Martin. I may be barking up the wrong tree, or may be a not so good clue!

I'm not generally a big fan of Dean Mayer's puzzles, whose wavelength I'm often not on, but I don't think you can fault this clue - one sense of "spoil" is a clear synonym of a meaning of "itch".
