To the listener means "sounds like", so sounds like novel (not in the book sense), meaning recognised

Would you prefer answers or hints, emrach?

Thanks Joan and ChrisE - I thought listener meant ear would be in the word. I suppose I could try hints and then if I still don't get it ask for the answer. Also it might be the only way I learn the cryptic hints. Is there a word for cryptic hints?
