'Poet' doesn't refer to the name of any particular poet, it's just another word (fairly uncommon, I'd say) for one.

Stuck on last clued 5:
8d Blame having removed tip of foot (5) ?DI??. EDIFY maybe, but don't see the cryptic.
23a Narrow tube from container by stream left out (7) CA???L?. CANNOLI maybe, but don't see cryptic is back part.
35d Palm cut up for essential oil (5) ?????
42a Crumpled Levis accepted in case (6) ??L???
40a Eating these days, had food deliberately sliced? ???E?
Any pointers on any of these would be greatly appreciated.

23 The 'can' part is right - the whole thing is a tube inserted in medical procedures.
