Thanks to terry and bbc for yesterday.

"What helmsman does in ships, but not in the morning" = steers.

"He's captured French King's castle? Such bravery!" = heroics. I suspect my knowledge of French is letting me down here. I can see the HES and the C for castle - that leaves ROI.

"Old letter by eastern saint carried in mass" = epistle.

"He raised money in early stages of Jewish history" = Joseph. Is this something to do with Peso (raised money)? If so, is 'early stages' the hint for us to take the first letters of Jewish and History?

He raised money in early stages of Jewish history = Joseph
bit tricky, this one.
He raised money in - He with Pence in raised = eph.
early stages of Jewish - 1st letters (soj) still raised = jos.

not totally convincing - I hope someone can do better.
