Good morning friends. Hope you enjoy today's offering. J

I set crossies just for pleasure. I wonder if some of you excellent regulars would like to try a few of my clues? Since they're new, no letters!

Please withhold solutions till 5 pm (GMT + 1) to allow others to have a go.

1. A companion in hospital or in bed (6)
2. The best player's back (8)
3. Meteorological phenomenon created on-line (2,4)
4. Risk all on one play or film with everything going (5,3,5)
5. A mobile phone which admits only women would be quite a remarkable thing? (10)

Hi Jolan,

These look good, I have Number 3, and an idea for Number 1

Off to work now, I'll check in tonight to see your solutions.

Hi Jolan

Another set of good clues- thanks.

I think I've got 1 - 4 and have an idea for 5
although I don't believe the clue, as given, quite works.
I have to go to a birthday party for a grandchild this afternoon but hope to be check in later on. I'll also reflect on No 5!

I have to agree I think I've got the answer to 5 but I've not grasped the method.

I think 5 works; the substitution seems fair. Off to a funeral, but hope to be back in time for the show.

Just got back. Only had time to glance at these earlier. I remember thinking "pallet" for 1, but looking at it now I see that that can't be right. The ones I saw right away were:
2) CHAMPION
3) EL NINO (can't do the tilde)
5) PHENOMENON (NO MEN for "only women", admitted by PHE ON- again, that seems perfectly fair to me)

Hi all!
Les 40; Thanks for having a go
Tony; Hope the party went well
Andyc; All correct, Ari explains 5.
Well done Ari on 2,3,5.
And Jazzy: Sorry about this week. I've followed your other posts and you are a cracker at solving much mor difficult ones than mine. xx

I append my analysis, just for completion.
Thanks again all.

1. H + or = hor, in 'cot'(bed) = COHORT = a companion (Chambers D + C. Oxford D)
2. (double) The best player (n) = CHAMPION = back (v)
3. anag (created) of on-line = EL NINO
4. film (v) = shoot. the works = everything going (Chambers D), yielding SHOOT THE WORKS = risk all on one play (Chambers D)
5. a mobile phone = anag of phone = PHEON. admits = lets in. only women? = no men. Yields PHENOMENON

Bless

J
