8d: Possible truth about Afghans making the distance (8). F-r-o-g. This has to be "furlong" = distance. Can anybody explain the cryptic bit?

Yes - I thought of the dogs just after I made the initial post. Could also refer to an Afghan coat - long and furry, as well. Furs fur.....
