Almost there, but think some letters must be wrong, as I'm left with:
12a (5): said school members are in the country W?L?M
25a(5): Succeed taking Georgia into northern town W?G?O

Would be grateful for answers (including my errors!) and explanations, thanks

The second one is WIGAN - WIN around GA (Georgia)

The first one is WALES (said as a school of whales)

That mucks up 8d:Right in the atlas which I had as easement but is now e.s.s... and
21d: A Spaniard is a Greek which I thought was odeons but is now .d.n.s.
