I think this maybe a bit more obscure.Although most butterflies rest with their wings together ,and moths spread apart ,there are many exceptions .Moths can link their fore and hind wings together by a small hook,butterflies do not have this ability.Only a suggestion though.

Butterflies are not allowed to attend a Moth Ball. That would be gate-crashing ;)

To (boringly) return to a possible answer, butterflies on the whole can rest with their wings together vertically; moths tend to fold their wings together behind them, forming a V shape (difficult to describe without diagrams). However there are borderline cases, such as the Skippers.
