Last one then I'm finished! I think that 7d works as 'Rimbaud', which means I am left with A-S-M for 14d.
All I can think of is Assam for a state. I can see a large number at the end but how does 'assa' work for retirement? Or have I got these two wrong altogether?

Sorry, Phillip. Very remiss of me.
14a is 'State of a large number after retirement.'(5). I have A-S-M

I think it's A + mass (large no) backwards (retirement).

Brilliant. I'd never have thought of it that way, Phillip. Thank you.

Aksum [ a k sum, k meaning 1000] an ancient
state. I hadn't heard of it either!

torq, it's a nice word, but where does the retirement bit come in?

I'd say Assam works very well with that clue.
