Thanks to all for the big 'thrift' debate yesterday. I have no access to the correct answers, I just believe what I read here:
http://dailymailcrossword.web.officelive.com/default.aspx

Let's hope this clue has a simple explanation:

"Sticky end for Moth and her 'Dream' friend" = cobweb.

And this one:

"Clerk provides stopgap after student leaves" = filer. Taking the L (student) out leaves Fier. I don't get it...

Many thanks.

Hi Pooksahib,

1. Moth and cobweb are characters from A Midsummer Night's Dream.
2.Stopgap = Filler. Take away the student to leave FILER

Hi pooksahib
The 2nd clue is suggesting filler for stopgap

Thanks both. So is it just me or would a better clue not be "Stopgap provides clerk after student leaves"?

Xword convention/protocol requires the definition part of the clue (Clerk) is at the start or end (with a few exceptions)

I do see your point tho.
would be better to somehow add an "L" to filer to get stopgap, rather than other way round.
