Am finding it very hard to get started on this. There's a complicated preamble, involving some clues - I'm hoping these two are normal.
29 A. Cheerful John succeeded for Germany (5) ????y
('Happy' fits, but don't see how it works with the clue)
41 A. Hand shaking dropping golf shot (6)
??s???
Thanks for any help.

Very obscure - it's nashki, which is a type of script (shaking without g anagram)

The other one is SUNNY

A "dunny" is a lavatory (= John) in Australia. Take out D (Deutchland) and replace with S for son gives the answer

I can't claim any great credit for nashki - put "shakin" into Chambers Word Wizard, find "nashki", copy into Google to see what it meant!

42a (originally) is w(AIT U)p.
30d works OK with 41a.
