How the 1d. works out I'll never figure out.

Left = Port
Chap = Man
Anag Due to war.

Left - Port "The side of a ship or aircraft on the left when one is facing forward"

chap - man

due to war breaking out - indicates an anagram of 'due to war'


'e.g. Oxbridge' - Oxbridge is an example of a Portmanteau word (oxford and cambridge).
