26a. Remains kept by churchwarden, say (6).

I have D*T*L*. I can see dottle fitting with remains, but I can't see how the churchwarden part is relevant. Or am I completely off the mark? Any ideas?

Dottle is tobacco remains left in a pipe. A churchwarden is a kind of pipe.
