20 A. Stylish number provided by twenty outwardly (6) ?i????
38 A. In East, criminal follows Indian vehicle with rear missing (4) ??n?
The preamble says there is a misprinted definition in some clues - and 'lengths in some clues do not correspond to grid entries.'
Sorry I have given so few letters, I'm struggling this week.

Nifty definitely sounds right, but there are six cells to fill in - I don't know what the bit about 'Lengths...do not correspond to grid entries.' I'm over halfway with this, maybe enlightenment will come soon!

I have the same problem. What to put in the spare grid spaces? If 4 down is PUG, for example, there are 3 surplus squares. Do I put the answer in the first 3? Two are unchecked so how to work it out?

NIFTy is first 5 cells. PUG is first two and the fifth.
I am almost there - I have the character and only 17d and the intersecting unclued entry to find.

Is the A of 23 in 17d? I thought CREEDS for 17d but can't fit that in.

Don, I gave up on this - but I think 17 was Credo (c/clubs+oder/river, going backwards).
