Good morning, on the occasion of the Spring equinox. Hope you are well and that you will enjoy the below. J

I set crossies just for pleasure. I wonder if some of you excellent regulars would like to try a few of my clues? Since they're new, no letters!

Please withhold solutions till 5 pm (GMT) to allow others to have a go.

1. He bowed first then crooned about the affair (7)
2. Plainly off-colour, having imbibed the gin cocktail (5,6)
3. Fix a raised rim around the wardroom table, for example (6)
4. Saluted with a telescope? (6,4,5)
5. Often its cure is brought about by shams (12)

And what better way to mark the arrival of spring than to wait for Jolan to finish a dinner marathon? (We know you'll come in first!) Actually, it's already summer here in the Northeast (US). It's been almost 80F and we're expecting more of the same. Rather eerie.

Have got 1,4 and 5. Playing with possibilities for 2, and have no ideas re 3.

And your mother said you should be modest. I've only got 1 and 4- have to shake them up and let them settle.

It is interesting to see how different clues stump different people. I've got 2 to 5, but can't see number 1.

Yes, it is odd. I got 1 with just a glance. Didn't get 5 till just after my last post, and am still dwelling on 2 and 3 while going about chores.

Have been away for much of the afternoon and had another look at this puzzle when I returned - am still stuck on my modest 60% pass rate and am unlikely to improve.Am looking forward to seeing the solutions.
