I'm completely mystified by the preamble!
I've got a few answers in the grid and I'm stuck.
Can anyone enlighten me in any way?
Thanks in advance

It's the Inquistor crossword in the Independent magazine.

Hi mjk, this one had me stumped for ages too, but i've just seen the light! If you can get some of the clues, you'll start to notice word patterns in the grid. The preamble describes 3 sayings, all with the same meaning, which can be found in the grid (rows 6 and 8) particularly. Hope this helps!

I have all the "a to o" shaded. Just x to find - is there some significance about the yellowish shaded squares that were already in the grid?

Difficult Inquisitor this - I have found x in the centre column, but not entirely sure I've dealt with it in the correct way, so need to have another look.

I found it easier at first to plough through the grid, highlighting any letters not in the wordplay.

Have a complted grid except for 22d for which I have the letters: c?ay?s. Also I have identified eight of the ten clashes, so I'm assuming that 22d yields another two. Any help with this clue please?
