'Listener' was definitely right - and 'setters' seemed to be the only thing that suited my letters for the second word ('s?t?e?s).

Never heard of it tho' Joan; & it don't make no sense! Usually there is some sort of twisted/warped logic in the answers!

The setters of the Listener crossword (in the Times) set very hard puzzles. The answer 'listener setters' has 'ist'/first+'enter, anagrammed, inside 'letters'/characters.

I like your logic Joan & thank you again!
I'm not used to that crossword which I assume often has the perimeter cryptically clued.

Sayonara.
