I didnt think this clue was very accurate. It can only be GAINS ON but thats slightly different to/from COMES CLOSER. Draws closer would have been better

Yes I agree, when AB suggested it I struggled to see how it worked. Maybe when creating a jumbo the setter sometimes gets desparate to finish it off and takes less care.?

I apologise to Setter, suggesting that fatigue had set in.! I can see that saying one horse gains on another is common but hadn't known this as an accepted phrase. Thanks all for your research and comments.
