5d steel component = manganese; yes, but how does clue work? Also "man" in clue is part of answer, which is poor setting.

22d Is "bail" a partition in a stable? If not, how does this clue work?

Have now understood the answers.
5d Man dropping a full-length steel component.
Mn is the short scientific name for manganese ("a" dropped). Nice clue.
22d Partition in stable that may be jumped.
Yes, a "bail" is a partition between stalls in a stable or barn. Unfortunately "rail" would also be a perfectly good answer, but perhaps too simple for a cryptic crossword.
