Despite the clues given, 3d the illegal trousers escapes me. The word for illegal hooch in Prohibition fits but no connection with trousers. I've looked in my wardrobe, the only wide bottom trousers are my Oxford Bags which seem to have gone out of fashion and don't fit the clue or my waist. Help.!

hi plodder
Bootleg trousers are a style where the trousers are wider at the ankle.

Hi plodder...

Bootleg is a certain cut of ladies trousers, mainly jeans.

Skinny fit/bootcut/bell bottom etc.

The illegality is surely to do with Prohibition times in US. I think alcohol was described by that word.

Meantime I am stuck on top right hand corner. Two little clues

8Across Anticipate one in an Asian temple
4Down - Knock back small American rug.

I have one letter for each so Quick Solve will be of no use. I am sure Jazzgirl will come to my aid, yet again!

He8Across Anticipate one in an Asian temple

Hello Mondrian
Have only just finished a phone call (friend having confusion with tax code !)
8a the asian temple is 'a wat' with one (i) in it = another word for anticipate
4d rug is slang for a false hair-piece (3 letters) + s (small) = 'knock back' (a drink for example.
Hope this is helpful
