I think break a record is CRACKING PACE - crack is to break and record beaters need a cracking pace.

Hi Poppy,

The answer could be DEAN. A group of clergy in the Anglican Church are known as a chapter and they would be devoted to a DEAN, a senior clergyman. Unless anyone else has a better idea.
