Got a clue answered but can't fully reconcile it!

Make notes on just a trifle of jingly verse (8)

I've put SINGSONG but why the 'G' at the end?

The G must be just a trifle of jingly, but is it really make notes and not makes notes?

I think it's just a double meaning: make notes - sing song. a trifle of jingly verse - singsong

Ah. Thought it might be SINGS ON G. Like your explanation better.

Thanks for replies. Yes it was just MAKE NOTES not MAKES NOTES which indicates that my breakdown of SINGS + ON + G was erroneous.

I thought it was because "sing" is "make notes", and if something "goes for a song", it goes for a trifle/trifling amount, so sing + song.......
