11d: Pub's empty - could indicate some kind of poisoning (4): -e-d. ?Lead?? No idea why, other than that lead can be a kind of poisoning.

pub empty = pb = lead?

Good shout Trevor - Latin word for lead is 'plumbum' (I believe) - hence 'pb' as the elementary abbreviation.
