I normally have a few drinks around my mates house and play with this crossword on Sunday mornings.
The clue was ,Architect of the Florence Duomo.I think they may have made a mistake,the only name that fits is Giotto,the artist?

Giotto's Campanile is separate entirely from the Duomo in Florence. Brunelleschi is generally thought of as the main architect.

Jws and AB I do agree with both of you,according to Wickie he was just an overseer.
Bad clue methinks?

I agree it's an iffy clue. The bell tower is not part of the main building. it stands on its own.
