Am almost finished this, but have got stuck.
6 D. Earl,endlessly mad and despicable type, raised hell once (8) tar???i?
(Can see 'tartaric' but don't understand where earl comes in.)
16 A. Spirit captured by amateur commentator (5) ??kam
The 2nd letter of 16 A is the 4th of 6 D.

It doesn't quite fit but TARTARUS is part of Hades (Hell) in Greek mythology

A mistake in my 1st post - the 2nd letter in 16 is the 5th in 6 D. Hope this didn't confuse anyone.
